    A renter with no car and no children should not be reading about vehicle logbooks and school transfers. Eleven questions cut the list down to the organisations that apply to your move, and nothing else.

  • The deadline and the penalty, in writing

    The driving licence is up to £1,000. A council can add £70. Ignoring an electoral registration request is £80. Every entry says when it is legally due and what happens if you miss it, so you can tell the urgent ones from the weekend ones.

    Questions people actually ask

    Does this work for a move in Ontario, BC or anywhere outside the UK?

    No, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The whole value here is the UK-specific legal deadlines and penalties — the driving licence, the vehicle logbook, council tax, the electoral register, the TV Licence, Child Benefit. A Canadian or US move has a completely different set of obligations, so these deadlines would be wrong for you. Use a generic checklist instead.

    Are the deadlines and fines here real, or rounded up to scare me?

    They are the real published figures at the time of writing, in September 2026. Not telling the licensing agency about a change of address is an offence carrying a fine of up to £1,000. Councils can levy a £70 penalty for failing to report a change affecting council tax, and £280 for a repeat. Ignoring an electoral registration request is £80. School absence penalty notices start at £80 and rise to £160. Out-of-date pet microchip records can bring a £500 fine. Amounts do change and rules differ across the four nations, so check the official page for anything you are relying on — every entry names who to check with.

    Where does my list go? Can anyone see the reference numbers I write in?

    Nowhere, and no. Everything you type stays in your own browser’s local storage on this device. There is no account, no server, no analytics and no external request of any kind on this page. The flip side is that it is not backed up: a different phone, a private window, or clearing your browsing data means starting again. Once your list is filled in, print it.

    I moved three weeks ago and have done almost none of this. How much trouble am I in?

    Almost certainly none, if you act now. These penalties exist for people who never tell anyone, not for people who are a fortnight late. Do three things today: the driving licence and logbook, council tax at both the old and new address, and anything benefit-related — those are the three where money is either accruing against you or being paid to you wrongly. Log the reference numbers as you go, and the rest of the list can follow this week.
